About canned fish

Canned fish is ready-to-eat food made from meat, fish and other primary products. Raw material is being placed in jars, hermetically sealed and sterilized in order to kill microorganisms and increase shelf life.

The range of canned fish can be divided in the following groups: natural, in oil, in sauces, fish & vegetable and pates.

Natural canned fish is made from the most valuable species of fish like sturgeon, salmon, herring, mackerel, etc. The fish preserves its color, taste and smell. Natural canned fish can be presented in its own juice, with the addition of oil, in broth and in jelly.

Canned fish in oil is produced from almost all commercially significant fish species. Depending on the semi-finished product heat treatment method, these canned foods are divided into the several subgroups: blanched fish, fried, smoked, baked and dried.

For example "Sprats in oil" can be made from Baltic sprats, sprats, european anchovies or small Atlantic herring.
